Liquavista CEO Questions the Current Value of Mobile TV
Cambridge, UK, October 4th 2006 – Mark Gostick, CEO of Liquavista, is questioning
the current value of mobile TV to subscribers. Arguing that the technology behind today’s
displays can’t deliver a satisfactory picture, Gostick doubts users will get to appreciate
the full benefit of the service and is concerned that the poor experience will give mobile
TV a bad name before it has the chance to gain wide spread uptake.
Gostick comments that as today’s mobile device displays can’t be seen properly
in normal lighting conditions that’s got to ultimately impact people’s enjoyment
of watching TV on the move. Add in the issue that using a mobile device in this way is also
going to greatly impact battery life and suddenly subscribing to the service is even less
appealing.
“Who wants to have to hold their hand over a screen to block out the sun whilst they
watch the lunchtime news?” asked Gostick. “I’m sure that Mobile on TV
will be a great success and a real boon for subscribers… just as soon as the displays
on mobile devices can actually handle it.”
The positive news for wannabe subscribers is that it isn’t expected to be long before
the industry can introduce the next generation of displays that will not only use 90% less
power than today’s but that can also be seen in all lighting conditions, inside or
out. Gostick concludes that “It won’t be until this time that mobile TV becomes
a service consumed by the masses.”
